Who We Are

We are a group of Men and Women who reside in the Shelby - Tennant area who are dedicated to serving the Citizens in and around the area of Shelby Iowa. We respond to emergencies such as Fires, Medical Emergencies, Vehicle Accidents and other emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We take pride in What we do and Who we serve. We have several fundraisers throughout the year to help fund our operation costs and any equipment that may need repaired or replaced. Every year, we answer approximately 80 calls for help from our neighbors.

Current Fundraisers

We are always actively seeking new members. We are looking for interested persons wanting to lend a hand to their neighbors. The Shelby Fire Department has regularly scheduled meetings for training and business every month. There are also committees and fundraisers that need staffed as well as calls for service. The members are expected to respond to as much of the activities as they can and expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the By-laws of the Fire Department. We would love to contact you and give you more information. Please contact the Fire Chief at any of the means listed on this site.

The Shelby Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1892 by a group of Shelby citizens who were concerned because of neighbors that had lost many barns and homes in the area. After a particularly large fire in a neighboring town, the group went into action and raised enough money to purchase a water pump that was pulled on a hand cart. Eventually, the group bought a team of horses. That team of horses was sold to purchase the first engine powered fire truck for Shelby. Over the years, Volunteers have proudly served the Shelby area. Today We have five response vehicles including an Ambulance. We also have an antique fire truck that was used in Shelby. Today, it is shown in parades and other public events to remind us and the community that we do have a proud tradition of service and that we intend to keep it for years to come.
